Missed council tax payment: the first fourteen days
One missed instalment starts a legal clock most people never knew existed. What happens in the first fortnight decides how expensive this gets.
The reminder mechanics
The rules allow two reminders in a financial year. Pay a reminder within 7 days and the instalment plan survives. A third missed instalment triggers a final notice with no reminder — the full annual balance falls due. This acceleration is the trap: people budget for the missed £150 while the council is now legally pursuing the remaining £1,200.
What to do this week
If you can clear the instalment, do it inside the 7 days and the escalation stops. If you cannot, contact the council before the deadline — councils can agree revised arrangements, and asking before a liability order exists is negotiating; asking after one exists is pleading. Check whether you qualify for Council Tax Reduction and whether section 13A discretionary reduction applies. Council tax is a priority debt — it comes before credit cards, every time, because its enforcement powers are stronger.
