Council finder
Find which debt framework applies where you live and what your local council should be helping with — including the three things almost nobody knows to ask for.
You never have to pay for debt advice. MoneyHelper (government-backed), StepChange, National Debtline and Citizens Advice all give free, confidential advice with no obligation. We would rather you got good advice somewhere than bad advice from anyone.
Three things to ask your council that most people never do
1. Council Tax Reduction. Every local authority in England runs its own scheme, and the level of support varies significantly between neighbouring councils. Ask whether you qualify and whether an award can be backdated — backdating is sometimes possible and is worth real money.
2. The Household Support Fund. Councils administer emergency help with food, energy and essentials. It is not widely advertised, uptake is low, and it is separate from anything the DWP provides. Ask for it by name.
3. A section 13A discretionary reduction. Under section 13A of the Local Government Finance Act 1992, a council has the power to reduce or entirely cancel a council tax bill in cases of hardship. It exists in every English and Welsh authority and is used far less than it should be, almost entirely because people do not know to ask.
And two more if rent is the problem
Discretionary Housing Payments. Council-administered funds for shortfalls between housing benefit and actual rent, and for arrears. Apply through the council, not the DWP.
Housing options. If you are threatened with eviction, your council's housing options team has statutory duties towards you and can act before you lose your home. Contact them early — the duties are stronger before you are homeless than after.
Why we do not have a page for every postcode
Because it would be worthless. There are around 1.8 million UK postcodes, and generating a page for each with one word changed would be scaled content abuse under Google's own policies and, more importantly, would help nobody. We build area pages where we can say something genuinely specific about that council's recovery process and local support — and until we have done that work for an area, we would rather send you to the council directly.
Want to take this further?
Answer eight questions and we can pass your details to one FCA-authorised debt advice firm, if you want us to. Or read the guides and go to StepChange instead — both are fine with us.
We are a marketing introducer. We publish information and, if you ask us to, we pass your details to an FCA-authorised debt advice firm we work with so they can contact you. We do not give debt advice, we do not provide debt solutions, and we do not decide whether any solution is right for you. We are paid by the firms we introduce people to, never by you.
