Missed a credit card payment: the first 30 days
One missed payment is recoverable, cheap to fix and quickly forgotten. What decides the outcome is what happens before the second one.
The first fortnight
Pay the missed amount if you can, and ask the lender — politely, once — to waive the late fee as a first miss; many will. If you cannot pay it, that is the moment to say so, because an agreed arrangement stops the count, while silence lets month one become month two.
What lands on your file
Arrears markers count upward month by month; lenders generally register a default when arrears reach roughly three to six months. A default is severe — it stays six years from the default date and closes most mainstream credit — which is precisely why the earlier markers exist as warnings. One late marker fades in significance quickly; a rising count does not.
If this is not the first
Repeated misses mean the payment does not fit the budget, and pretending otherwise buys nothing. The affordable-offer letter resets the terms honestly; the default notice page covers what arrives if drift continues.
