Sample debt letters that say the right thing

Four letters cover most of what creditors need to hear: freeze the interest, here is a realistic offer, put it in writing, prove I owe this. Each one is written to be copied, customised and sent today.

These are working templates, not legal advice: each explains when it applies, what to customise and what to expect back. Creditors are used to receiving letters exactly like these — a clear written request with a budget attached is taken more seriously than ten phone calls. If a collector you do not recognise is writing, start with prove the debt; if the phone will not stop, go written-only; and the pairing that resolves most situations is freeze interest followed by a pro-rata offer.

The letters

How to send any of them

Post with proof of postage, or email with a read receipt where the creditor accepts email. Include your reference number on everything. Attach a budget where the letter offers payment — the budget calculator produces one in the standard format creditors recognise. Keep copies permanently: the paper trail is the point. Everything here works for people who would rather not phone — debt help without a phone call maps the whole written route.

If letters are arriving faster than you can answer them, that is the moment for the urgent help guides and free debt advice, not for writing faster.
