Can you pay an IVA off early?

An IVA can end before its term — if creditors agree that money now beats payments later.

An IVA can be settled early through a variation: a lump sum — typically from a third party such as family, or an unexpected asset — is offered to creditors as full and final settlement in place of the remaining payments. Creditors vote on it like any variation, and if approved the arrangement completes early with the remaining included debt written off.

Where the money comes from

Usually a third party: a relative offering a sum that only exists if it settles the arrangement. Your own windfalls are different — an inheritance or win is typically already claimable under your windfall terms, which changes the negotiation entirely, so take advice before offering money that may already be owed. Outside an IVA the same negotiation is a plain full and final settlement offer.

What your remaining contributions add up to

Not a settlement quotation — arithmetic. This shows what is left to pay on schedule, which is the number every settlement conversation starts from.

Scheduled contributions remaining£3,600

This is not a settlement quotation. Your supervisor must determine what proposal, if any, can be put to creditors — and additional amounts can be relevant, including agreed uplifts, equity terms and windfall obligations. Creditors vote on any variation under the same 75%-by-value rule as the original approval.

Creditors decide

The offer goes to a variation vote under the same 75% by value rule as the original approval. Creditors weigh certainty now against contributions later; a realistic offer with clear provenance and a supervisor’s recommendation carries weight. If approved, you finish early and the completion process follows as normal.

Early settlement changes when the arrangement ends, not the credit file: the record still runs six years from the date the IVA starts.
