How long does a Debt Management Plan last?

There is no set term. A DMP runs until the debts are repaid, so the length is simple arithmetic — and interest can change it completely.

Applies to: England, Wales & Northern Ireland

A Debt Management Plan has no fixed length. It lasts until everything included is repaid, so the term depends on how much you owe, how much you can pay each month, and whether creditors freeze interest. With interest frozen, £15,000 at £250 a month takes about 5 years. If interest kept running at 9.9%, the same plan would take about 7 years.

What to do now

  1. Find your realistic payment with the budget calculator.
  2. Model your own balances in the payoff calculator.
  3. Ask each creditor to freeze interest — the freeze interest letter.

The arithmetic

Divide what you owe by what you pay. Interest and charges, if any creditor keeps adding them, stretch the term — and if the interest added each month is more than you pay, the balance never falls. The table shows illustrative examples.

Illustration only. Assumes one combined balance, the same payment every month, no new borrowing and no fees. Real plans have several creditors who may treat interest differently.

Why the interest freeze matters so much

Creditors do not have to freeze interest on a DMP, though many do under FCA rules on treating customers in difficulty fairly. If one large creditor refuses, the plan can run far longer than expected. Check your statements a few months in: if a balance is not falling, tell your provider. A plan that cannot clear the debt in any realistic time is a reason to look at other options with an adviser.

What can shorten a plan

  • Paying more when your income rises — providers review budgets, usually every year.
  • A lump sum used for full and final settlements, if creditors agree to accept less.
  • Statute-barred debts. An old debt with no payment or written acknowledgment for six years may no longer be enforceable. Check before including it — statute-barred debt.

What can lengthen it

  • Reducing payments after a fall in income.
  • Missed payments, or creditors adding charges.
  • Debts you forgot to include that later need adding.

Compared with fixed-term routes

An IVA normally runs five years (six with home equity under the 2025 Protocol), a DRO lasts 12 months, and bankruptcy usually ends after 12 months, though income payments can last up to three years. Those routes write off what is left at the end but carry restrictions, public records and, for an IVA, fees. A DMP never writes anything off, so its length is the real cost to weigh. Common questions

Is there a maximum length for a DMP?

No. A DMP runs until the included debts are repaid, however long that takes, unless you end it or switch to another solution.

Do defaults drop off my credit file before the DMP ends?

They can. A default stays on your credit file for six years from the default date, so on a long plan it may disappear while you are still paying.

Can I pay off a DMP early?

Yes. You can pay more at any time or use a lump sum, and some creditors may accept a reduced full and final settlement.
