Creditor contact log
Write down every call, letter, visit and message as it happens. A dated record is what turns “they keep ringing me” into evidence a creditor, an Ombudsman or a court can act on.

Why keep a log?
Creditors and collectors keep detailed records of every contact with you. Your own record evens that up. If contact becomes excessive, if you are told something that turns out to be untrue, or if a promise is not kept, a log made at the time is far more persuasive than memory. It is also useful when you get advice, because an adviser can see straight away who is chasing and how hard.
What to write down
- The date and time, and how they contacted you.
- The company and, if you can, the name of the person or a reference number.
- What was said, especially any threats, deadlines or promises.
- Anything you agreed, and anything you asked them to do — such as contacting you in writing only.
Using it in a complaint
Attach your log to a complaint to the firm. If you are not happy with the final response, or the firm has not replied within eight weeks, you can take a complaint about a lender or debt collector to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Read what counts as creditor harassment and use the harassment complaint letter to ask for the contact to stop.
You never have to pay for debt advice. MoneyHelper (government-backed), StepChange, National Debtline and Citizens Advice all give free, confidential advice with no obligation.
Common questions
Do I have to tell a creditor I am recording calls?
Keeping notes of your own calls is fine. If you want to record calls, you can record them for your own records; if you want to share a recording, get advice first.
Is the contact log private?
Yes. Everything is stored in your browser on this device and is not sent to My Debt Cleared. Export a CSV or PDF regularly, because clearing your browser data deletes the log.
How many calls from a debt collector is too many?
There is no fixed number in the rules, but the FCA says firms must not contact customers excessively or at unreasonable times, and must not use aggressive or oppressive behaviour. A log shows the pattern.
