What is a pro rata offer?
A pro rata offer shares the money you have left after essential living costs and priority debts between your non-priority creditors in proportion to what you owe each one. If a credit card is 40% of your non-priority debt, it receives 40% of the money available. It is the method free debt advisers use, and the one creditors expect: nobody is favoured because they shout loudest.
Why priority debts come out first
Rent, mortgage, council tax, energy and court fines carry the most serious consequences — eviction, enforcement agents, disconnection. They are never shared pro rata: you agree what you can pay towards each of them first, and only what is left goes to the rest.
What if there is nothing left?
If your essential spending and priority payments use everything, the Offer Pack writes token payment letters of £1 a month instead, and tells you so. If you cannot even cover your priorities, free debt advice is the next step — that is the situation formal solutions such as a Debt Relief Order exist for.
Sending your offers
- Fill in each creditor’s address and your account number on its letter.
- Send every letter at the same time, with the income and expenditure statement.
- Start paying the offered amounts on the date you choose, even before replies arrive — it shows good faith.
- If a creditor refuses, ask it to explain why, and ask a free adviser to negotiate.
You never have to pay for debt advice. MoneyHelper (government-backed), StepChange, National Debtline and Citizens Advice all give free, confidential advice with no obligation.
Common questions
How do I work out a pro rata payment?
Divide what you owe one creditor by your total non-priority debt, then multiply by the money you have available each month. The Offer Pack does this for every creditor at once and rounds each offer down to the penny.
Do creditors have to accept a pro rata offer?
No, but FCA rules require regulated lenders to treat customers in financial difficulty with forbearance and due consideration, and a pro rata offer backed by an income and expenditure statement is the standard way to show what is affordable.
Is my information sent anywhere?
No. The budget, debts, names and letters are worked out in your browser and kept on your device so you can come back. Unlocking the downloads sends us only your first name, email and mobile, and a summary such as the number of creditors.
